Emoticons (a combination of the words "emotion" and "icon"), also known as smileys, are those ASCII characters you use to express yourself in an e-mail or in a chat room, when, for example, you don't have the time to scan in a photo of yourself frothing at the mouth and send it to your ex-wife.
Sometimes you need to turn your head when looking at emoticons. For example, when you're having really good cybersex with someone, you might see :).
