of the Day Award

For the most unnecessary - but coolest - product, website, or doodad of the day.

The Winner for October 23, 2001

Real War

Real War is a real-time computer strategy game that lets you nuke the crap out of the Middle East. And as if that weren't enough, the game is actually based on "the official military Joint Forces game being used to train the US armed forces."

The basic idea is that a terrorist group attacks a US military base. When the US responds with conventional missiles, a nuclear device belonging to the terrorists is accidentally detonated. The terrorists then accuse the US of starting a nuclear war. (As if them starting a "conventional" war was ok in the first place. Bastards.)

As mentioned above, you can actually give them what they accuse you of. Or, you can use a range of other less-colorful options to wipe terrorism off the map. An hour or two of this game each morning might be a great way to start your day as a medical technician, paralegal, or temporary warehouse worker. Who needs coffee when you have tanks and bombs?

(Here's a real review of the game.)
