Self-Gratification
of the Day Award

For the most unnecessary - but coolest - product, website, or doodad of the day.

The Winner for November 27, 2001

Apple iPod

For $400 flat, you can get Apple's new MP3 player that proudly carries on a famous Apple tradition. That is, building computer products that don't require a complete absence of a social life to know how to use.

iPod is about the size of a deck of cards, and has a 5-gig hard drive to store both music and files. (Evidently that translates into about 1000 songs.) And it synchs with Apple's iTunes, so all your MP3s get uploaded into it automatically when you plug it into your computer. An entire CD is transferred in about 10 seconds.

The rechargeable battery lasts 10 hours, so if you work long hours, you'll need two for the commute. Bastards.

But whether you are a geek, or just want to look like one, iPod is for you.
