I've been dabbling in country music lately, thanks partly to the influence these guys, but you just gotta love these punk versions. The covers of Dolly Parton's Jolene, along with East Bound and Down (the theme song from Smokey and the Bandit, one of my favorite childhood movies), and On the Road Again (with its intro from the Misfits' Astro Zombies, another all-time favorite), are 25 minutes or so of great music.
1/28/07
The more I listen to her, the more I realize there's a third reason to like Dolly Parton: her music. Recently, I've been listening to this collection of some of her love songs, both pop and country. One note to the subnormal intending to marry, though: it's a good idea to listen to the lyrics first. I Will Always Love You should be played at your divorce, not your wedding.

Howard
Funnier and more entertaining than ever on Sirius, Howard Stern ranks with Larry David and Sacha Baron Cohen as one of the funniest performers alive. And in terms of consistency and quantity produced, no one even comes close.

Ping Pong
I caught this Japanese movie on a Singapore Airlines flight a year or two ago, thinking I might get to see some decent ping pong playing. I was right, but I had no idea that I'd be watching an incredibly uplifting movie that is - get this - explicitly about hero worship. And it's directed very slickly by a guy who did CGI on Titanic. I recommend you find some way to find the DVD (e.g., eBay) and buy it immediately. There's a good review on the IMDB, but stop reading when you get to the paragraph that starts with "But! The payoff is another thing" - after that a spoiler is given. Here's another site with a brief review. (Looks like the official site is only in Japanese.)

I was sad to hear that Gregory Hines died today. Not only could that guy freakin' dance, but he always seemed to radiate a dignified, contented self-confidence. Check out this mostly-overlooked movie, Good Luck. Ignore what the cynical bastard at Amazon says about it - it's a good, funny, buddy/roadtrip movie worth seeing a few times.
