11/13/01 11:59:40
Jimmy Cliff
Song Name: Harder they come
Covered by: Poison idea
Posted by: Frunk
E-mail: fredrik@villvaragud.com
Website: www.move.to/disgraceland
Comments: It was a tricky queston because many punkbands have covered catchy but cheesy lovesongs and made them better but many of them turn out a bit too silly.
Some garage-rock/punk bands have livened up a bit obscure but good songs from the 60's.
Well,i chose this because the original is also good and despite it«s originally a ska/reggae tune it«s still got a lot of the same attitude that can be found in good punkrock.
Otherwise the "punkrock jukebox" volumes are good cover-cd«s but unfortunately just covers of punk-songs. Has any punkband covered "gimmie shelter" by the way ?

D
D.O.A.
Song Name: The Enemy
Covered by: Hanson Brothers
Posted by: John Fischer
Website: anfsr.opgaming.com
Comments: The Hanson Brothers (no, not the Oklahomans, they're Canadian. And they really like hockey. And their sound is a Ramone-stlye sound) take D.O.A.'s "The Enemy" and give it a hockey twist on it. Nevertheless, it still sounds like "The Enemy," playing the song almost as D.O.A. would have played it. It's from the hard-to-find comp "Johnny Hanson Presents Puck Rock Vol. 2."

Covered by: me first and the gimme gimmes

Comments: i like me first & the gimme gimmes but i think that other bands have better covers than they put out. i probably wouldn't put a me first song on my personal top 5 covers list but if they are going to be all over this list, then i felt that their best song by far should be mentioned: hats off to larry - check it out; it is the b-side to the shannon 7"

Posted by: nyquil

Hawkwind
Song Name: Death Trap
Covered by: Slotnick
Posted by: Dragon Dead
E-mail: christmu@eunet.no
Website: home.eunet.no/~christmu/pulp/
Comments: This Hawkwind classic, off their "PXR5" album (1978), was yet another one of militant frontman Robert Calvert's odes to the fighter and test pilots of the RAF. An energetic and fast punk song, it was covered by US punk band Slotnick on the "Assassins of Silence/Hundred Watt Violence" tribute album (1995). The chorus "Krankshaft, crank it up, monkey on elastic, going up again" is snarled to the breakneck speed of this song, and is possibly even better than the original.

Jimi Hendrix
Song Name: Manic Depression
Covered by: NoMeansNo
Posted by: John Fischer
Website: anfsr.opgaming.com
Comments: OK, NoMeansNo isn't really an out-and-out punk band. I'd call them prog-core, if I had to, but whatever. Their version of "Manic Depression" was done back in 1985 on the You Kill Me EP; their cover is better than competant-it's quite good. At least, I think so.

Iggy & The Stooges
Song Name: I Wanna Be Your Dog
Covered by: The Idols (Syd Vicious)
Posted by: Tex Catheter
E-mail: texcatheter@punkass.com
Comments: Hmmm, seems to me that the ultimate punk rock cover project should at least be mostly punk rock. The majority of the stuff listed is no more punk rock than Candy Flip's cover of the Beatles "Strawberry Fields." There's no Pagans here, no Stranglers, not even any Dead Boys. They all did some killer cover tunes. And the Lazy Cowgirls' cover of Green Acres is pretty fuckin' raw too.
Editor's Note: Let me guess, you're one of the people who thinks the Sex Pistols started punk. :) Hell, no. It was the Ramones, baby. (JR)

Iggy & The Stooges
Song Name: Search & Destroy
Covered by: The Dictators
Posted by: Dragon Dead
E-mail: christmu@eunet.no
Website: home.eunet.no/~christmu/pulp/
Comments: This Iggy & The Stooges song is probably their best known, if not the best, of all their songs, next to others like the title track off "Raw Power", the classic and thouroughly furiously paced live rock'n'roll masterpiece LP from 1973, next to other Stooges classics like "I Wanna Be Your Dog" off their first album, or "1969" and "TV Eye" off "Fun House". Covered by NYC punk band The Dictators on their 1976 "Blood Brothers" LP, a band, which next to The Ramones, Suicide and probably even Blue Oyster Cult, were essential bands of early NY punk. The Dictators version of the song is even faster than the frantic and juggernaut-sweating Stooges original, though its probably almost a biblical sin to claim its any better! The Dictators were an excellent band, btw, and put out a string of great albums in the late 70's.
