Three Things You Can Do To Help Reduce Violence in Our Society.

by Jason Roth

1. Eliminate violent language from your vocabulary.

Censoring violent images in films is only the beginning. We must go deeper than images to the root of thought itself: the concepts we use.

Think about how your own knowledge of concepts affects your actions. For example, if you didn't know the word "dictionary", where would you look it up? By the same token, if you don't teach Johnny what a "gun" is, how is he going to shoot anybody? What in heaven's name is he going to shoot anybody with?

The key is: eliminate the words, and you've eliminated the thought. Eliminate the thought, and you've prevented the action.

Some of the words you can stop using immediately are:

Gun, knife, billy-club, sickle, catapult, landmine, cat of nine tails (you can use other words to describe cats and tails, such as "kitties" and "furry vertebrae extensions"), scissors, fire, electricity, quicksand, puncture, Chinese water torture, muzzle, grab, thwart, seize, impinge, interfere, interrupt, and fistfuck.

Go to:

  1. Eliminate violent language from your vocabulary.

  2. Refrain from punishing your child.

  3. Never use violence in retaliation to violence.
