Introduction
There's been a lot of talk about the problem of violence in the movies. As we know, children are molded by their environment. When children see an act of violence committed in a movie (whether it be a mobster shooting an innocent store owner or a rape victim kicking her assailant in the crotch), they learn that it is acceptable to commit violence.
Imagine the results of a kindergarten field trip to the movie Seven. You'd have twenty little hyperactive brats on your hands running around trying to duct-tape their daddy's Swiss Army knife onto their mother's strap-on dildo and forcing little Billy at gun-point to do you know what to poor, little Samantha.
"Well, that's the breaks, Samantha."
Not much to say to a little girl that's just been brutally raped, is it? Unfortunately, that's all we can say to Samantha, and to countless other young people, until we as a society do something to counteract the trend of violence.
The question is: what can we do as private, socially conscious individuals?
The answer: plenty. Violent behavior stems from many social influences, reaching far beyond movies, or even the media. We have outlined below three specific actions you can start taking today to help reduce violence in our society.
Go to:
- Eliminate violent language from your vocabulary.
- Refrain from punishing your child.
- Never use violence in retaliation to violence.
