E-tarded E-mail
International Star Registry

Another e-tarded e-mail exchange. The following is an actual, if short-lived, e-mail exchange.

To: International Star Registry

Dear International Star Registry,

Can you please tell me if it is possible to name a star after someone with a generic name, such as John Smith? I would like to name a star, but I do not want any numbers associated with the star, like "John Smith 97255". (That would obviously defeat the point.) Can you please confirm that I can name a star after "John Smith", and that no numbers will be associated with the name? If necessary, I am willing to consider paying more to prevent others from using the same name.

Also, do you offer package deals on the same star? In other words, if I wanted to purchase star names for several people, could we name the same star after each person at a lower charge?

Finally (sorry for so many questions), but do you also take orders for planet names? It seems as though astronomers are willing to accept real names for planets, even though they still rely on boring numbers for stars. I thought maybe if I named a planet after someone, astronomers would actually use the name and it would really count. If you do sell planet names, can you tell me if there's a discount on dwarf planets? Since Pluto was recently demoted to a dwarf planet, I had the idea that it might be a good investment to name a dwarf planet after someone and hope that in the future it gets promoted to a full planet.

Thanks very much.

Jason,

We have several star names that are the same, however they ALL have different star coordinates. Not sure if I have answered your question.

We name each star ONCE. We name stars only.

Thanks,
International Star Registry

Dear International Star Registry,

Thank you very much for your reply.

Would it be possible to pay for exclusive rights to a name? I'd be interested in the possibility of buying out any existing names to be the sole name holder.

Can you also answer my question about bulk name purchases? Would the price be cheaper if I want to name the same star after two or more people?

Do you have any plans to get into the planet naming business? Supposedly there's an outfit out west that deals in asteroids, but I'm interested in dwarf planets or bigger.

Regards,

Jason Roth
