Subject: ketchup and other stuff along the lines
hi,
i've just flicked through some article in the culture bashing section (i think) on ketchup. now, lets think about it...KETCHUP???? actually, it was something about giving up church for ketchup. lol. that is the most random subject i have ever read an article on. giving up god for ketchup? interesting... but i seriously did NOT understand the whole thing. i know, i know.. "READ THE WHOLE FUCKING ARTICLE!!!!" but believe me, if i wasn't this lazy, i would have achieved many great things already
do you ppl just wake up thinking, hmm.... now, what should i do today, i know! i'll write an article on ketchup! lol.
that would be pretty cool actually.
well, it's always interesting to come to this site, cos you ppl do the wackiest things with....things...
but sometimes, when i read through a few of your articles, i reckon that some are a bit inconsiderate, and some of the stuff you say would be pretty offensive to other ppl. that, and also the readers comments, damn it, the editors notes can be pretty harsh (do you get much hate mail? lol), but then again, it starts off with someone disagreeing with the other, and the other getting defensive, and the cycle goes on...
one last thing.... i haven't read all the stuff here, but it seems most of them are done by someone called jason? is that right?
Editor's note: Jason? Yep, that's me. (JR)

Editor's note: I could say that "the world isn't all black and white." But I won't. Instead, I'll say that the stuff that's grey is made up of a little black, and a little white. Now, am I any less confusing? Actually, I'm mixing metaphors, but what the hell. (JR)

Subject: Halle Berry
Dear Madam Sir,
Your white. I bet the ranch on it.Why? Not because you don't think Halle Berry deserved the Oscar with out even having seen the film.
[Editor's note: I wrote, "I have no idea whether she deserves it." Get your facts straight before you sling your typos. (JR)]
I am as skeptical as you are. Not because of you're distaste for the "Tribute to Mr Poitier" film with among others Iron eagle's finest all pigeon holing a great man's career in the race catagory. I thought it was actually I quite damning sign of the times with regards to race, and that it was a shame that it should some how be linked to a man that to me represented the exact opposite. The mere fact that you think being "half white for christ sake" makes a diffrence was a hint, but no the reason I am positive, is because you think all this garbage is a result of "ancestors being whipped." You realy think that it is all about a "bad" patch of history and now everything is all gravy?
[Editor's note: The complete sentence you're quoting is: "When you cheer louder for black actors because their ancestors were whipped and chained you ignore the actor's goddamn acting!" I think it's clear in the context that the "whipped and chained" part is symbolic of the broader perceived victimhood status of blacks. But for people like Spike Lee, the issue isn't much broader. His production company is called "40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks". (JR)]
Doesn't an episode like this drive home the point that things are still very wrong.I doubt Sidney would bear that quality if he didn't grow up on an isolated island where the color of his skin was about as meaningful as the color of his eyes.Or maybe it has more to do with the fact unlike "ancient history" that black folks are now as much a part of the problem. Does that take away some urgency or interest from the problem?
[Editor's note: Things are not "still very wrong". Our modern racial problem is not the problem that Poitier had. Our problem is that we dare to insult Poitier by refusing to recognize how far we have come, due in part to his help. (JR)]
Psychotic episode, huh? You take your confidence and peace of mind for granted. I too wish Ms. Berry had a little more Sidney in her when she accepted, but it takes a white person not too recognize her emotions.
[Editor's note: Do you think it "takes a white person" to compliment one black person and criticize another? I'm sticking with my original statement, "when you're a woman, you can get away with being a psycho". (JR)]
Forgot one more possibility: Maybe you think the Oscars are not a venue for anything but untainted and honest recognition of real cinema?
[Editor's note: Reread the end of the article, which yet again, contradicts your unfounded forecast. (JR)]
Try and think outside your box buddy. Who knows you could even try and compensate for other peoples shortcomings like I'm sure people do for you.
Editor's note: People who use phrases like "think outside the box" couldn't think their way out of a paper bag. (JR)

Subject: Halle Berry
You might have misinterpreted my Halle Berry comment--When I said she didn't win by merit-- She did, if only because she ACTED in a film. But the award is for BEST Actress not Xth Best Actress, she is not according to me.
Also, did you hear about the 'incident' at the University of Waterloo (In Ontario)? Half a class of Philosophy students plagiarized their term assignment on ETHICS.
Funnier still is the fact that they all plagiarized the same report.
If this happened at Berkeley the professors would be like "Great. They understood my lessons. Nothing like seeing ideas in practice!"

Subject: Reverse Racism?
What's with the recent media outburst of black actor syndrome? I almost puked when Halle Berry won the best Actress Oscar. Obviously she did not win by merit. I think kind of thing deserves it's own article: i.e: The ideas of 'diversity', 'multiculturalism' and 'equality' are becomeing heavily prevalent in Hollywood, and the attitude is," After years and years look how far black people have come" -- why not hand them oscars and run news stories about how more and more black actors are being recognized? Of course they are becoming more and more recognized! Why shouldn't they be? But the deliberate flaunting of this on front pages in T.V news stories and the like does the opposite of promoting the equal rights they are entitled as human beings - it says being a minority gives you special rights - that since your ancestors suffer - you get a free credit card and your picture plastered on billboards. This is reverse racism --- the first said blacks were not equal to whites because the colour of there skin. The current says they get special treatment just because of the colour of there skin. The only difference is how these people are treated. it looks like society has again done a 360. JR- Can you help me out with this?
Editor's note: I'm writing an article on this now; check back tomorrow. The short answer is that you're wrong when you say "Obviously she did not win by merit." I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know if she deserved the award. The problem though, is the same as with affirmative action: everyone has a right to be skeptical. (JR)

Subject: Yates crap
First, thanks for this site. You're brilliant.
Second, when are you going to go off on this Yates bitch? I've been checking in regularly looking for a rant about her. There's so much material to choose from, it's almost too easy: the kids' biblical names, her 'save them from the devil' excuse, the stupidity of the insanity defense, the slimy lawyer trying to defend her, her moronic family claiming she was a good mother... the possibilities are endless!
Her case demonstrates perfectly that religion IS insanity. If she had not believed all the devil/god bullshit, those children would still be alive. The pansy-ass jurors should have fried the bitch, to put her out of OUR misery. It's apalling that we have to spend tax dollars keeping that psychotic cunt alive in prison for the rest of her life. Yes, she was insane, and her religion probably caused her insanity (or maybe her husband was butt fucking the poor children too...that would do it). In any case, her insanity is the REASON she should be fried. She's proven herself incapable of living in a civilized society, so get rid of her, goddammit! I'd personally donate $1 to the catholic priests' defense fund (a thought almost as disturbing as having my left nut chewed off by an angry Rottweiler) just for the priviledge of personally flipping the switch and smelling the smoke!
How many more disgusting examples of the evils of religion do people need?
Editor's note: There's a few things I could say about that case. For one thing, why is Yates insane just because she believes she was saving her kids from the devil? Religious people (including any who might have been in the jury) always say they believe in the devil until someone actually claims that they've seen him. Yates was just consistent. Second, what kind of standard for insanity is the ability to tell right from wrong? All you need to do is believe that murder is right and you can get off the hook. And third, if Yates was denied the death penalty because she no longer poses "a future danger to society", then why will she be up for parole - and the freedom to be around kids - in 40 years? (JR)

Subject: Fellow hot sauce addict
YES!!! i'm sooo excited to find another addict like me!! My addiction to hot sauce began in middle school, when my favorite snack was tortilla chips and any hot salsa or sliced jalepeno peppers. In college i made the HUGE bottle of frank's red hot sauce MINE. i knew it was bad when i got to the point that if the school cafeteria ran out of hot sauce there was nothing "good" to eat! strange, but now, after graduating from college, i found myself eating, just so i can taste the hot sauce! my friends are convinced i'm burning a whole through my stomach, but i've actaully gotten friends to sample hot sauce and now i have a few other fellow addicts. i suppose i'm still the master though, i go through a medium sized bottle of red hot about every week or two. and i agree...about the only things i eat without hot sauce are breath mints, water, cereal, and i forget the other one, but i agree!! oh yeah...and i have the new heinz tobasco ketchup,i thought i was a freak fro adding more hot sauce! my favorite hotsauce concoction? cottage cheese, lots of frank's red hot and crunchy chowmein noodles...i'll eat this plain, inside a tortilla, or on a salad!! it's really grr8!
Editor's note: I once got a gallon jug of Frank's Red Hot for Christmas, and finished it off on wings in a couple months. I used to think my friend's cousins in Korea were crazy for dipping hot peppers in hot sauce as a snack, but no more. Jalapenos and hot sauce, a bowl of kimchi, and pickled habaneros are now in my regular diet. My favorite sauces currently are: Matouk's, Walkerswood, or any generic habanero or scotch bonnet sauce. I just had some Grace's on my Jerk Chicken tonight. Yum. (JR)

Subject: boycotting the 2008 olympics
wazzup!!!!
heya, i came across your article about boycotting the 2008 olympics. before reading the article, i had seen no reason for boycotting the 2008 olympics..........and after reading it, i still don't.
however, i do see your reasoning, and everyone has there own opinion, there is no right or wrong, but personally, i still don't adopt your reasoning for it.
so yes, it's true that china doesn't exactly have the most flawless human rights record ever, and yes, things do ocasionally get a bit gruesome there, but by boycotting the olympics, are we going to acheive what we want from china? is it in any way at all going to help the betterment of their human rights situation? no.
however, if we do accept their deserved winning, with all eyes on beijing, it will help china get it's act together.
besides, if it hasn't even happened yet, how do you know that this step isn't for the better?
the olympics is the greatest sports event ever and holds a great significance for maintaining peace, enhancing friendship and promoting civilization. by turning cold and boycotting beijings olympics, will it in any way demonstrate respect for that?
on the contrary, it will conjure up resentment, contempt, and it will break friendships.
i'm not saying that you're wrong in any way, we just see things from a different perspective, and since i've seen yours, you can see mine.
(hey mate, sorry if my ramblings don't make sense, i'm only 15!!!)
Editor's note: If you're going to say "there is no right and wrong", try to be consistent and stop using the words "yes", "no", "true", "betterment", "human rights", "deserved", and "better". The reason you should be apologizing has nothing to do with you being 15. (JR)

Hi JR,
I seem to think it's time for another embarrassing failed effort at not turning this comments page into my personal diary, so here I go:
I was just thinking about asking what you are currently listening to, when you posted your new picks. Here was my question: have you heard the Strokes? Certainly you have, but I mean have you realized how incredible they are!? Is This It was my favorite indie album all year. Though rather hookless, all their songs are 100% melodic, and the rhythm is mind-numbingly tight, and the energy is staggering. It staggers me.
You ought to give indie a chance. When you praise Barenaked Ladies, it makes me think you don't realize there are lots and lots of bands that are better than them in the way that they are good: that play with intelligence and perfect pop sensibilities, creating music that is both catchy and complex, and that rocks as hard as 77 punk. I suggest one course of action for you above all else: see Dismemberment Plan live (3/14 & 15 at the Bowery Ballroom are the NY shows), and I bet you will be converted.
Your movie reviews are satisfying as shit: bravo, bravo. And I have also especially enjoyed your recent responses to negative posts. But I can't believe the Strokes weren't on your list. Until next time, then.
Editor's note: Ok, two points. First, I don't mind getting preached to about music, because (a) I continue to do it myself to this very day, and (b) because once you graduate college, all you seem to find are boring idiots who don't even listen to the freaking Back Street Boys, so discovering new bands becomes progressively harder. Yeah, I've heard the Strokes, and in fact one of my favorite new bands, Longwave, is opening up for them in their UK tour. I haven't heard more than "Last Night", though. I missed "Dismemberment Plan", but I'll try to find some clips on the Web - thanks for the tip. (JR)

Just recently, someone called my house and clearly had the wrong number. After he asked to speak with somebody named "Mark," I said "You have the wrong number" and hung up. This sort mix-up has been occurring since the dawn of the technological age, and I suggest that we turn what would normally be a mundane happening into michievous fun. The next time someone calls and asks for a person that you don't know, say "Ya.. just a second" and then hang up. He or she will think nothing of it and will hopefully not realize that he/she had the wrong number. If they call right back, pick up and ask "who is this?" After they answer, hang up again. At this point, they should begin to worry... asking questions like "why is he/she hanging up on me?" "does he/she not want to talk to me?" Of course, there are many ways to torture these innocent individuals. Be creative and with luck you'll have the enjoyment of knowing that you made some boob just that much more insecure.
Editor's note: This is the kind of productive thought I like to hear about. A friend recently suggested to me that when a telemarketer calls, try to keep them on the phone for as long as possible, by actually weighing the pros and cons of whether you're going to buy whatever it is they're selling. Eventually, they try to get you to make a decision, and they actually start getting annoyed at you! (JR)

I mean, okay...my family was raised as polygamists for over 50 years now, and not once has any of them, nor any single person I know been told that they have to marry their uncle, let alone anybody at all, or any of that bullshit. Just because a couple jackass men do mooch off the welfare system, or get 13 year old girls pregnant doesn't mean that the whole group has to be persecuted for it. There are people like that in every religion, and they never get persecuted as bad as the polygamists. All they need to do is give the right punishment (not having 5 wives, but mooching off the welfare system, and having sex with a minor) to those who committed the act. -Emily from Utah

She grudgingly admitted that not all people are created equal in terms of what they should be allowed to do (e.g. raise children, or fly a 757 loaded with innocent people). And I agreed that its not cool to pick on the "mentally challenged."
So, if one of those fucking retards comes along and manages to read your article (and somehow manages to understand it), make sure you apologize to them for being so insensitive. ;-)
Editor's note: First of all, you have some cool links on your webpage. (I liked the "Bizarre Stuff You Can Make in Your Kitchen".) Now as to your comments: Look, I'm not in the business of making fun of the mentally retarded. It's just that sometimes my work does take me into the field, and hey, I consider myself a jack of all trades. If Hollywood gives me a movie equating retards and non-retards, I am perfectly happy to take on the project. I can also type at approx. 55 words per minute, and yes, I will do Windows. By the way, if my ranting about "I Am Sam" causes a husband and wife to have a long philosophical discussion like the one you described, with your wife grudgingly agreeing with my point, then I guess this website ain't doing too badly. A. Davis totally misses the point. Correct me if I'm wrong JR, but your article is not criticizing "retards" per se, but Hollywood's fascination with the un-able, the in-competent, the in-sane, the botched, the "differently-abled", etc.. The problem is that nobody seems to be interested in those examples of humanity that have EXTRAOrdinary ability, intelligence, resolve, determination, creativity, or virtue. If "retards" such as Sam can acheive as much as he did in that movie, imagine how much a NON-handicapped person could acheive with the same effort! Show us that, Hollywood!

I realize that this web site is not for folks who have any compassion or caring for those less fortunate then they are - This is evidenced by the meanspirited and cruel review of I Am Sam - I have not yet seen the movie but I do work with people who have disabilities - including those who have mental disabilities. They are not "retards" but they are people who have limits on their ability to learn and process information. It would seem to me that Jason Roth fits this category as he does not seem to be able to understand the struggles that children and adults with disabilities face each day. I have witnessed some of these folks raising children and some do as well if not better than those that claim to be of average or better intelligence.
I don't know how the movie presents this issue but I do know that Jason Roth's review presents a picture of a person (himself) that needs a great deal of education about disabilites and compassion. I hate to think of a world overrun with the likes of him.
Editor's note: Deep down, I'm really just like the Beast in Beauty and the Beast. Deep down, I really do want to love people. And thanks to you, A. Davis, I'm now able to shed that rough exterior, and no longer be overpowered by hatred. Thank you, A. Davis. The next time I see a Hollywood actor pretending to be a retard, I will no longer laugh at him. Instead, I will give him a nice, soft, pat on the ass. Who are you, the mysterious A. Davis? I need someone like you in my life, because my soul is empty without you. Please, A. Davis, teach me in the ways of compassion. And perhaps, in exchange, I could teach you in the ways of getting a fucking clue. (JR)

Jason,
If that's your attempt at Aristotelian logic, I suggest a refresher course sometime in the near future. Let me use fewer big words and explain it to you SAT analogy style: John Walker is to hippy Marin Country as Charles Bishop is to button-up Tampa. Blaming John Walker's treason on his Marin County upbringing while excusing Tampa's Charles Bishop as a "misguided kid" is hypocrisy. Conservatives can't have it both ways. Simplistic interpretations are great for op-ed pieces written under deadline, but those of us who think about the day's events after the newspapers have moved on prefer to analyze events outside the narrow context of the culture wars.
Editor's note: Just a point of fact: I think many of the conclusions by conservative columnists about the causal relationship between family upbringing and horrible acts like these (or, say, the Columbine shooting) are very suspect. Their "reasoning" often consists of rationalization, with little knowledge of the individual who committed the crime.
But your post reminds me why I still have no intention of setting up a discussion board on this site. You are arguing against points neither Doug, nor I, ever made. You obviously read an editorial or two by conservative Republicans who (you believe) "excused Tampa's Charles Bishop as a misguided kid". You then assume both Doug and I agree with that, ignore the words we actually used, and proceed to argue against your unnamed opponent. Why don't you go have your fantasy discussions on Usenet? (JR)

The home lives were different, yes; that's only one factor. The same system taught both of them that their minds were impotent, so logically(!), faith was the answer! In this case faith and the hatred of the system that left them feeling impotent turned them to the first piece of news that said "i hate america", and then they hung on for dear life, or dear death or whatever... So what is the solution? NO 'PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION'.

I read Capitalismmagazine.com nearly every day. As for your idiotic "kids of the flower children go insane" comment, only an unthinking idealogue would attempt to blame John Walker's treason on the left. If liberal California is to blame for John Walker, then how do you explain the plane-crash suicide of conservative Florida's teenager Charles Bishop? Last time I checked, Tampa was pretty far to the right. Bishop was a straight A student who wanted to join the Air Force after high school and carried the flag for his school's color guard. He was found with a suicide note in his pocket praising Bin Laden. How do things like this happen? The answer is that sometimes there is no answer. Sometimes immature, emotionally troubled kids do horrible things, and try as you might, you just can't figure it out. The entire world doesn't fit into any neat little idealogical box, no matter how hard you shoehorn it in. Of course you're going to see conservatives spinning this into a "poor misguided kid" story as they shift the blame for Walker onto the left. What could be more predictable? They have no other choice because the farthest right-wing elements in this country are as intellectually ossified and morally bankrupt as any other fundamentalist movement, including the farthest-left. The world is a big, complex place and requires some non-knee-jerk thinking from time to time, which is something that you (and the creator of this web site) don't seem to understand. To try to blame the Left for Walker or the Right for Bishop is at best an intellectually dishonest oversimplification, and at worst just plain stupid.
Editor's note: Let's play "find the fallacy" in Kevin's post. (1) "If liberal California is to blame for John Walker, then how do you explain the plane-crash suicide of conservative Florida's teenager Charles Bishop?" One doesn't exclude the other. (2) "The answer is that sometimes there is no answer." Contradiction in terms. (3) "Sometimes immature, emotionally troubled kids do horrible things, and try as you might, you just can't figure it out. The entire world doesn't fit into any neat little idealogical box..." What could be a neater "little idealogical box" than "you just can't figure it out"? (4) "The world is a big, complex place and requires some non-knee-jerk thinking from time to time..." Exactly, so don't assume from square one that there's no explanation. (JR)

The author of this article is a great argument for mercy killings. Ever heard of post-natal abortions? Tell your mom to look into it.
You are accusing people of being racist for pointing out that someone has some sort of unusual attraction to others based not on attractiveness, but based on race or skin color. If you are attracted to people based on individual traits or characteristics, it has nothing to do with their race. But, it is those who say things like, "I only date black people" or "I only date latino women" that have a screw loose. Trust me, there is some event that occurred in their life that left them fucked up beyond repair, and this is their way of acting it out. If you purposely only date people of a certain race or skin color, especially if it is of one other than your own, you are screwed up. Don't try making excuses. See a psychiatrist and find out exactly what your problem is so that the rest of us don't have to put up with you annoying us.
Editor's note: I'd agree with you and even go out and get myself that abortion you suggest, except for one thing. You're putting words in my mouth. The words I used are: "an appreciation for, or even preference for, the physical qualities of another race". I.e., the racial characteristics are what some people find physically attractive. So yes, I am saying that the attraction is "based on attractiveness". As far as the "I only date black people" people, I didn't even address them in the article. I agree with you that that is screwed up. They might not have had "some event in their life" which screwed them up psycholigically, as you say. But at the very least, they are placing more importance in a person's physical appearance than his or her mind. (JR)

Hi, Jason.
Your Fetish Fetishists article was spot on! Although I've never been Stateside (I hail from Great Britain) I've heard that there are also similar prejudices around against people who are attracted to members of the opposite sex of differing age (sometimes only slight differences in extreme cases) and even different height. A case where a German web site on the appreciation of tall women was pulled by legal/political pressure was brought to my attention a couple of years ago. This would appear to be part of a perverse union between political correctness and racism perhaps?
There seems to be a lot of scapegoating brain rot, insincere oversensitivity and sad control freakery around and I'm glad there are people like yourself out there fighting it. I don't always agree with your point of view (Walk for Capitalism? aaaaaarrgh!) but since you're defending my right to think and speak for myself I will be recommending 'savethehumans.com' most warmly to all those I know.

Subject: Music and Rhythm
Hi Jason,
Regarding your friend's point about primitive music consisting solely of rhythm (two rocks banged together), I have to raise the possible objection that even percussive sounds have pitch--and that taken together, they create a melody. Example: the stomp-stomp-clap of "We Will Rock You". The stomp's have a lower pitch than the clap. The melody of that song is three notes long before the vocals. Granted it is an extremely simple melody, but I hold that it is a melody nonetheless. I do think that rhythm is a necessary element of melody and of music in general, but it is not sufficient by itself to create music. Keep in mind, Car engines, the ringing of the telephone, the ticking of a clock, the beating of a heart--these things all have rhythm too. But those things are not enough by themselves to classify as music. (Many artists such as Pink Floyd used such innocuous sounds to CREATE music, but they didn't just record a clock ticking and call that a song--they used those sounds as PART of a song.) I still think you were right initially--music requires melody.

Wow. Classical is about nuance, while punk rock is "high energy" - talk about false alternatives. Blast (the way classical music is meant to be listened to) Beethoven's 5th, or Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor (IMO, one of the few worthwhile uses of an Organ), and tell me if they put you to sleep.
As you can tell, I like classical a lot. To pseudo-quote Beethoven on his "Ode to Joy" in his 9th Symphony; "It captures the sense of joy that exists in every man's heart". However, I don't refuse to listen to other music - I love jazz, blues, swing, rock, the occasional country (most is a little too "twangy" for me), metal, punk, and other. My approach to music is like Milton Friedman's approach to economists - There are only two kinds, good and bad.
With that, I can understand why people are easily turned off by modern classical music. Most modern classical-styled performance art is like "producing wooden-styled bridges with structural steel" (Pseudo quote from Atlas Shrugged). For this reason I can understand why someone would favor punk rock and the like, which is generally very original, and be turned off by classical. Then there are the "classical snobs" who will say, in not as few words, that the only artists worth listening to are dead. This is less of an aesthetic judgment than it is a rejection of achievement. It is analogous to the modern "art" world's recent embracement of Norman Rockwell, or the celebration of the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright or John Lautner after their respective deaths. There is much punk and metal that I love, especially those artists that take modern instruments, namely drums and electric guitar, to their full potential. However, as for the "themes", as Jason puts it, of most modern music, I find it excruciatingly difficult to wade through the vast muck of self-loathing, nihilistic garbage to find the rare, inspirational, life-embracing gems that are far more abundant in the classical classics.
Editor's note: Ok, the use of "theme" and "punk rock" in the same sentence was a little absurd. Since I have the complete Beethoven symphonies on CD gathering dust, I will re-listen to the part you mentioned. (JR)

Subject: Musical Taste
Hi Jason,
Perhaps I should have said that "one of the factors involved in musical taste is the amount of effort the listener wishes to exert." Of course there are many, many factors.
Also, you are 100% correct that the theme of a musical piece is the most important element, just as it is the most important element in a novel, a painting, a film, a poem, or any other work of art.
I can understand how my comments may have seemed pretentious, but I didn't mean to imply any kind of "special intellectual gift"--The point I was driving at was that different people seek different types of things from music, and that 90% of what they seek is optional--or in the vernacular, "Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks!"
This may seem obvious to most people, but most of the people that I respect and admire enjoy the same type of art as I do. I was intrigued by my own reaction when you didn't. I only mentioned "instant gratification" vs. "more effort" as an example of a factor of differences in musical taste--of course it's not an exhaustive explanation of musical taste by any means.
Please accept my apology for sounding insulting in my previous post. To date, I have nothing but respect and admiration for you and the work you are doing on this site.
Sincerely,
Chris McKenzie
Editor's note: Sorry I sounded like it was that time of the month for me, but I'm touchy about anything that sounds like "classical music elitism". I know that wasn't your intention, though. I actually thought more about this subject, and remembered a conversation with someone who believed that the most fundamental aspect of music was not melody, but rhythm. His evidence was mainly that the most primitive forms of music consisted of nothing but percussion. E.g., two rocks getting banged together, etc. An interesting point... (JR)

Subject: Music
Hi Jason,
I read what you had to say about Beethoven and was a little saddened. Of course I got over it really fast since musical taste is personal and optional (optional in the since of what you decide your taste will be, AND optional in the sense of whether you choose to HAVE any taste), so "no worries mate." I guess I just enjoy it when people I like like what I like (does that make sense?).
Anyway, I was thinking about it, and I concluded that part of musical taste has to do with the amount of effort one wishes to put into listening to a piece of music, and that, of course, is optional. If you're the type that wants to hear every nuance and dynamic of every instrument in a piece of music, then classical will probably appeal to you. However, if you prefer more instant gratification, high-energy type stuff, then punk is probably your thing. Then again, a lot of classical does sound like paint drying. Personally, I like a lot of different types of music, including heavy metal (Fear Factory, White Zombie, Old Metallica, etc..), but for me, nobody is heavier and more energetic than Beethoven.
BTW, I highly recommend a film called "Immortal Beloved" for anyone with a soul, Beethoven-fans and non-Beethoven-fans alike. Gary Oldman plays Beethoven, and the movie concerns the real-life mystery of who his great love was. It is excellently acted, directed, and produced in every way.
Congratulations Jason on still having a great site after all this time.
Sincerely,
Chris McKenzie
Editor's note:
Chris, I know you didn't mean to sound offensive, but you did. You're categorizing classical music fans specifically as "the type that wants to hear every nuance and dynamic of every instrument" and punk fans as simply desiring of "instant gratification". And that's a common attitude of many classical music fans. They think that they have some kind of special intellectual gift that enables them to mine for pleasure in places the rest of us peons can't even imagine.
I do prefer to listen to every nuance of my music, and all things being equal, I would prefer more complex music. But I think the essence of music is not the layers of complexity that have been added onto a piece of music, but the basic melody. Or if you prefer, the theme. If you don't like the theme, you won't like the song, regardless of how many instruments are playing it, or how many variations the classical composer and/or mohawk-wearing freak has written for it. Classical, in general, has different types of melodies or themes than rock, and it's that attribute specifically I find so boring in classical. My favorite classical piece, by far, is one in which I can hear real melodic similarities with certain rock songs I like. The piece is Pachelbel's Canon. And yes, I love the sound of violins. But I've heard a damn good rendition of it on the guitar, too.
Preference for the sound of instruments, by the way, as well as rhythm, are both factors in musical taste. I love the sound of an electric guitar. And though some of my favorite songs are mellow, just don't leave me stranded on an island without a pounding drumbeat I can hear once in a while.
Let Chuck Berry say the rest:
Just let me hear some of that
Rock and roll music
Any old way you choose it
It's got a back beat, you can't lose it
Any old time you use it
It's gotta be rock and roll music
If you want to dance with me

Hey Guys,
Thanks so much for the award but in your haste to dis you overlooked the link for the free American "Remember Flag" at the top of the home page. This is our deication to the World Trade Center tragedy and the reason we are offering it for free is that we don't want to capitalize off of that event. Hope this answers your question.
Editor's note: You are correct. Our Award Governing Body didn't realize that a "pencil flag" could be downloaded. (They will be severely reprimanded.) Your printable World Trade Center Flag is very nice. (JR)

'How many idealist punk-rock fans do you ever meet?'
I didn't mean just punk rock - it's fine as it is - what I meant is that today's punk is held up as good music - one of the few acceptable genres that have people bobbing their heads to punk and dance and then saying- "what the fuck is this?" to anything beautiful. Sort of like Peter Keating's buildings being on the top 40 and howard roark being flushed down the toilet.
it's not that I don't like punk--it's that I don't like that it has millions and miilions of fans while great music has few...
and no, 'people like what they like' is not the answer in this case- it's more of a case of shutting the mind.
Editor's note: Well, I don't know about "people", but I've tried listening to classical music many times (assuming that's what you consider "great"), and I find most of it is like listening to paint dry. (With a few exceptions.) Give me a three-chord NOFX or MXPX song over a thirty-chord Beethoven "piece" any day. I think people need to be damn careful about using the word "great" when it comes to music. Complexity plus the fact that you like it does not necessarily equal tolerable to anybody else. (JR)

I was forced to actually donate the money. Now, some starving kids in America (Like hell Afghanistan's getting it) get the benefit of the money instead. Damn.
Ah well. At least the site's doing great. Thanks for putting various uppity people in their place, as usual.
Oh, and about your Rebel-Prude article - I'd just like to take this time to say that I am the one person who dislikes Harry Potter, not on the basis of satanism, but on the basis of I actually don't enjoy the books (shocking, I know, but trust me, I actually have a sense of humor and I really am human). That said, I firmly stand behind the right of all those people who actually do like it to read it uncensored over and over as many times as they want. I've seen fundamental types shut down a lot of stuff in the area I live - the rpg community almost died thanks to them - so I can understand when others have to deal with it.
I don't like you much, Harry, but I respect you - and salute you.
Rock on,

I'm saying to myself Why am I here? At age 50 I'm reading articles of Viet nam protesters, saying now wrong they were to ever protest the war, giving the north viet nam people the spark needed to get our troops out of Viet Nam. Nice to say you're sorry after 30 years of having viet nam vets commit suicide, live deep in the american woodland, away from society where they cannot get spit on, and be called baby killers. Jane Fonda's stupid apology or whatever it was. I bought my first 2 cartons of smokes in boot camp in 1971, now I can't put them damn things down, smoke um if you got them they said, or the smoking lamp is lit. Kind of an award for mass casualties, and yes my spelling sucks [taken care of - Ed.], but what the hell. I ask myself Why am I here. I'm a viet Nam vet 100% disabled, three divorces later, having had my X wife's use he's a viet nam vet and he loses control, and all the happy horse shit that goes along with it. The past is history, and I'm all fucked up from it! You can't change History, the nation of Free Americans have to change their way of thinking - I do like tits and ass maybe because I'm a male and it's an instinct for males to have an attraction to females, but I could be wrong. Maybe religion would tell me I'm wrong. the hell with you religious people who think you're better than the rest. Go live with the Taliban if you don't like tits and ass, for that matter my ass. When it's all over and we have shown our mighty power to these ungrateful terrorists. It will be back to normal where you can't say shit anymore, with out some holy roller taking charge. Subject: Big Fake Breasts
Just a note of correction about Big Fake Breasts and women "dying each year because of this surgery." That is just more mis-information disseminated (an appropriate term in this context, yes?: dis-SEMEN-ated?) by the feminist movement. For the facts, check out "Science on Trial: The Clash of Medical Evidence and the Law in the Breast Implant Case" by Marcia Angell, who is I might add, a FEMINIST! Not that one has to be a feminist in order to have a monopoly on truth, but most feminists do act like they do, so it helps to shut them up when one of their own says, "Hey, you know what? We're full of shit!"

Apart from that paedophile suggestion most of the suggestions made are actually quite nice. for instance if a diabetic person is sufferring because he/she has a lack of blood sugar the gummy bears could be given to him/her to replace the lost sugar saving someone's life. Also marathon runner suffer from hypothermia after they stop running because they cool down so quickly their body cannot compensate so giveing them hot cofffee could help them to stay warm and also possibly in the middle of the race the caffeine could prove useful in keeping the runner active during the race. Whatever way you look at it these seemingly jackass ways to be kind are actually very nice. You are a gfited nicety.

Subject: Last Bastion of Common Sense
I remember in Orwell's "1984", there was a line about some of the best books tell you things you already knew - it's comforting that others see the same things you do. I just read the article "Saving the World from Islamic Jihad and Victoria's Secret," and it was such a relief to read. I can't really add anything, because it was dead-on accurate, especially that last paragraph. It seems more and more that neurotic crackpots (with too much time on their hands and a fuzzy distinction between reality and fantasy) run the world and make all the decisions. It's nice to know there're people out there who can see that, and are as pissed about it as I am.
Editor's note: It's all so ridiculous. If you and I keep pointing it out, the whole sham has got to fall apart at some point. (JR)

I found myself agreeing with your editorial about the Victoria's Secret fashion show and the inane worries our government has about it, until it occurred to me that half-covered titties have done a lot more damage in my life than anthrax, bombs, or any of that shit.

hi there jason,
i just wanted to comment on your article about fake breasts.
as a big breasted feminist i am appaled by your article were you say there is nothing wrong with implants. alot of women die each year because of this dangerous surgery. and because in other articles you are against fake images i really think that your description of feminsts is really stereotypical and frankly plain boring.
just i thought that you should keep in mind before you start rambling your consumerist, malechauvenist shit again.
thank you
ásbjörg una
ps. english is not my first language, so dont try to pull a grammar thing on me.
Editor's note: First of all, I want to thank you for your comments. Any response to one of my articles that contains the phrase "as a big breasted feminist i am appaled by" deserves some amount of appreciation. Personally, I think you should just talk to a flat-chested woman after she's gotten breast implants; she might not be as angry as you about my article. But let me make one thing clear. I am by no means elevating "fake" breasts above "natural" ones. I am sure that your naturally large breasts are completely worthy of support. (JR)

Subject: voting rights
Voting. HA HA. On saturday the 10th November I HAD to vote (turn up or face a fine). Here in Australia we must turn up to vote but do not have to as by making a mistake (deliberately or not) it counts as an Informal vote. In America do you HAVE to turn up at the polling booth??
I felt like taking my time and stood at the little cubicle for about 20 minutes, while the rest came in and went as fast as possible. Imagine if about 20 people ALL took their time voting at the same place at the same instance. Could the scrutineers there do anything? Could they throw you out or force you to vote. Would it be creating a disturbance if ALL the voters were silent except when asked a specific question. The crowd waiting outside would be the people being noisy and becoming restless. Imagine if the whole voting place was full of people saying things like
"The future of my country depends on MY vote. It is not a small decision for me to make. I want to properly think about who I vote for!" or something like this.
Imagine if it was the voting booth where the mayor/councillor/president/etc was going to be at a certain time. Could they tell the voters to leave?? (While doing this find out who is coming and shout out "I will not vote for this person as they are forcing me to vote!" or something like this)
Maybe I will do this next time .
Just ideas though.

Editor's note: No, we're not yet forced to vote. There is a general feeling, though (evident in places like college campuses and MTV) that voting is a duty, regardless of those things I mentioned in the voting editorial. It looks like Australia is ahead of us in terms of "progressive" policies. I love your idea for a voting sit-in, or rather, stand-in. What I ended up doing in my state's gubernatorial election is writing in "Abstain". I figured that would send more of a message than just not showing up. (JR)
