Every fall of the past ten years brings with it an anniversary. It’s one I don’t exactly celebrate. I’m always aware of it and it’s well worth my solemn attention, but it’s not particularly been a time for revelry. Ten years ago, this fall, I went on the first date with the woman who is now my wife. The anniversary of our first date was a placeholder until we married, when of course our wedding became the cause for celebration. But now, just weeks before the tenth anniversary of this date, and only weeks after the tenth anniversary of 9/11, we are expecting our first child. There is good reason for me now to reflect on the fall of 2001.

Here we go again. But don’t get me wrong. There’s a lot to love about France. It’s just that when they show up the United States in the realm of testicular fortitude, it’s just fucking embarrassing.

And while we’re letting ourselves get all emotional, here’s a Wall Street Journal headline to edge our embarrassment closer to shame:

Let me also issue the reminder not to judge a book by its cover. President Obama only looks like less of a buffoon than his predecessor. And I capitalized the “p” in “president” only because it was the first word of a sentence. My lack of respect for the man shall not take precedence over my abundance of respect for proper grammar.

Did anyone not know that at some point after a leader is forced out, another leader would need to take his or her place? MSNBC is reporting that the Egyptian protesters now fear a military coup. Is anyone over there really surprised? With whom and what do they want to replace their existing government? Some guy from Google?

Replacing a government can’t be easy. I’m just skeptical whether an entire constitution or bill of rights can be laid out in 140 characters.

The new Mel Gibson movie due out in Spring 2011 looks so bad that I am still, at this moment, unsure whether the joke is really on me. The Beaver stars Gibson and Jodie Foster, who also directs, and though described by some sources as a “dark comedy”, I see neither darkness nor comedy anywhere in the trailer, unless you count jokes on the audience as examples of dark humor. (Oh, and if you’re new to Unseen Movie Reviews, these are reviews I write prior to seeing movies and with no intention of ever evaluating my success rate.)
