The Beijing Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with the New York State Kennel Club and the Beijing Restaurateur's Association, will sponsor the upcoming International Dog Show.
In addition to jumping through hoops and getting their asses shaved, dogs will also have to prove their merits along side such fierce competitors as broccoli and cashew nuts.
"This is more than a dog show," NY Kennel Club PR chief Chris Barker said, "This is a humanitarian exercise." He was, of course, referring to the thousands of Chinese dog lovers who would be fed thanks to the poodles, retrievers, and beagles that will be involved in the competition.
"We are running a strict competition," Barker said. "Any dog that fails one of three rigorous MSG tests will be expelled from the show. If a dog's going to win this show, it's going to be on their own, without the help of any artificial flavors or colorings."
Animal rights activists are up in arms at the NY Kennel Club's decision to take part in the show. "It's not that we have a problem with the Chinese," PETA president Ingrid Newkirk stressed.
"It's their choice of forced-labor camp cuisine that really bothers us," Newkirk said.
