Letter to Journalist Kathleen Parker
by Jason Roth
Ms. Parker,
I just finished reading your article "Thwarting TV's talking heads". I am
in complete agreement with your central point: that the media should
voluntarily limit their reporting on biochemical warfare for the sake of
national security and to prevent needless panic.
However, you made one statement that was alarming in its
matter-of-factness:
"Were we [journalists] a licensed profession - and regrettably we're not
- we should have to sign the same oath that doctors do: 'First, do no harm.'"
Do you have any idea that you're advocating full-blown censorship? Unless
you're talking about a private form of licensing (in which case you
should have specified that), you are asking that the government decide
who can report, who can't, and what standards journalists need to meet in
order to practice their profession. Would you have liked Gore and
Lieberman to set those standards for you?
Regards,
Jason Roth
