If whites had been the persecuted minority in the United States, and blacks had been the slave-owners, Halle Berry could have been the first white actress to win an Academy Award in a lead role. She's half white for Christ's sake.
But let's ignore this obvious absurdity.
Here's the problem. The problem with the politically-correct racists in Hollywood is not that they gave the award to an undeserving recipient. (I haven't been depressed enough to want to see Monster's Ball yet, so I have no idea whether she deserves it.) The problem is that no one can actually believe that the Academy gave it to her because she deserved it. Given the Academy's all-black tribute to Sidney Poitier on the same night (and lots of other examples of Hollywood's political correctness), we have plenty of evidence that Berry's half-black skin color helped her to "win" the award.
This is the problem with political-correctness and affirmative action. Everyone can be rightly skeptical of Berry's award. Everyone can wonder whether the Academy gave it to her so they could brag to their friends at the Oscar cocktail parties that they helped make "Oscar History".
When you cheer louder for black actors because their ancestors were whipped and chained, you ignore the actor's goddamn acting! As spewed forth in Halle Berry's psychotic acceptance speech, the acting is irrelevant, even to her. All that matters, in the Hollywood politically-correct view, is that racial justice has been served. Halle Berry getting an Academy Award was like OJ Simpson getting acquitted. Yahoo! A victory for the black people!
Well, screw the black and white people who think that they deserve any of Halle Berry's, or Sidney Poitier's, limelight. I don't know about Halle Berry, but Sidney Poitier was a man with class, dignity, strength, and oh yeah, the ability to act! And as opposed to Berry, Poitier actually had some adversity to overcome; he didn't have a bunch of self-hating white liberals to keep kissing his black ass.
And contrary to Halle Berry, Sidney Poitier displayed some actual class in his acceptance speech for his honorary award, the vacuous award for who knows what, except maybe getting snubbed by the Academy for too many times.
That the Academy had to go back to movies like Iron Eagle to find black actors for their blacks-only Poitier tribute film, is a sign that Hollywood can't see beyond the color of someone's skin. Yes, the adjectives used by these actors to describe Poitier at the end of the tribute were accurate: strong, independent, courageous, etc. But aren't there any white actors who were inspired by Poitier? Does the respect of a fellow actor not count if it's based only on a black actor's acting?
To turn Sidney Poitier's career into nothing but black martyrdom is an insult to a man who should be recognized primarily for his acting.
Newspaper headlines this week read "doors were opened" by Berry's award. We are "a step closer to equality" in Hollywood. But if someone has evidence of racism in Hollywood, where is it? Black actors do have the freedom to get acting gigs. The only "equality" journalists must be looking for is an equal number of awards for each race. Here we go again: equality of results versus equality of opportunity. Liberals are so goddamn concrete-bound, they can't even understand an abstract concept like equality of opportunity. They need to be able to count trophies.
You might say that the Academy Awards were never about being the "best", anyway. (It's "leading actress", not "best actress".) But once in a while, it would be nice if all the stars and producers of the movies we love can get together and not be completely full of shit.
One last question. Have you noticed that when you're a woman, you can get away with being a psycho? I realize there's such a thing as tears of joy. But what Berry had was a "psychotic breakdown of joy".
