Some Inane Comments about the Battlestar Galactica Miniseries

by Jason Roth

I am going to do something crazy. I am going to turn on my television set and watch something other than Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld, and MASH reruns. Granted, what I'm proposing to do with my television set isn't much different than watching reruns. But, nevertheless, for me this is radical. Written on my calendar at this very moment on December 8 is "tape Battlestar Galactica". These bastards better not let me down.

As a child, I was such a Battlestar Galactica fan (and later, an A-Team fan) that I actually had the balls (i.e., lack of taste in acting) to give an oral report about Dirk Benedict being my favorite actor. (For some reason, having the words "balls", "taste", "oral", and "Dirk" in one sentence strikes me as a little gay.) The greatest qualities about Dirk Benedict as an actor was that he was always one cocky bastard, and his characters always got the chicks. What the fuck more do you want? Even Robert De Niro couldn't make this claim.

Unfortunately, Dirk Benedict won't be in the Battlestar Galactica miniseries. At least, not as Face. I mean Starbuck. No, I've been alerted this morning that the character of Starbuck will be played by a woman. Since no man could top Dirk Benedict, I have no problem with this. My only request? This new, female Starbuck better be a fucking slut. The male Starbuck was, so it's only fair.

The one other reservation I have about this miniseries is the tagline that's being used in the promotion.

"Never create what you can't control."

Let's hope that this is just advertising copywriters being their stupid, insecure selves, and trying to inject some bullshit cliche into their ads and call it "creativity". But, philosophically, there really isn't anything objectionable in that tagline. I would definitely agree that you don't want your goddamn robots shooting at you. Unfortunately, bubbling at the surface of that tagline is the potentially unstated but implied sentence, "Human beings are idiots who shouldn't be messing with science and should stick with eating and fucking."

Maybe not. Sci-Fi channel, don't let me down.

Did you have an opinion on this? Then post a comment.
